This commercial from the early
1980's aired on a, then, little known cable channel called the
Entertainment & Sports Programming Network, or ESPN. Back
then the league was refered to as NNHA (and before
that NNHL). Gordie Howe was the original spokesperson
for NNHA and was truly a class act. Gordie also made regular apperances in the
various NNHA member cities, skating with each beginner class. Trivia note: the
voiceover at the end of the commercial is league founder Ashley Root, who
started (then) NNHL back in 1980 at the Lakeforst Mall Ice Arena in
Gaithersburg, Maryland with a bunch of street-hockey-playing wanna-be ice hockey
players and whole lot of momentum from the 1980 US Gold Medal at Lake Placid.
